TJD, GMA News: In just 48 hours, online musicians recorded some 5.1 years worth of music with the immensely popular digital guitar that Google made as a tribute to guitar hero Les Paul.

Google said that the amount of music, equivalent to 40 million songs, was recorded in the United States, where Google extended its guitar Google Doodle by an added 24 hours due to high public demand.

“In 48 hrs in the US, you recorded 5.1 yrs worth of music (40M songs) w/ last week’s Les Paul doodle! Keep playing," Google said in its Twitter account Saturday.

Last June 9, Google uploaded the guitar Google Doodle as a tribute to American inventor and “guitar hero" Lester William Polsfuss (Les Paul).

Paul, who is credited for popularizing innovations such as delay effects, phasing effects and multi-track recording, collaborated in the design of the “Gibson Les Paul" electric guitar.

He would have turned 96 last June 9.

The doodle was an instant hit, with musicians and even celebrities posting their works onlne.

Caving in to popular demand, Google gave the “Les Paul" doodle a permanent home online, after it initially extended for 24 hours the “Les Paul" doodle, but only in its United States site.

Click Here who wish to strum on the digital guitar can now go to and play to their hearts’ content.
An earlier estimate by RescueTime, a time management and employee time tracking software, indicated 5.8 million hours had been spent on the doodle last June 9 alone.

RescueTime’s blog also noted tweets coming in for the trending tag #lespaul at a speed of 20 tweets/second or more.

“With each major online publication commenting and recommending the Les Paul Doodle, traffic was way up and people kept talking all day!" it said.

RescueTime said its estimates showed the average user spent 26 seconds more on Google.com than in previous time periods last June 9.

On average, users spent 36 more seconds time on last year’s Pac-Man Doodle, it added.

Yet, it said figures from Wolfram Alpha and Alexa showed Google’s daily unique vistor count went up to 740 million versus the 505 million last year.

“Google’s Les Paul Doodle consumed an additional 5,350,789 hours of time versus the 4,819,352 hours consumed by the Pac-Man Doodle ... Users did not spend much more total time at their computer than previous periods, but they did spend 10% more time at Google’s website than they typically would, meaning that the 10% more time spent at Google was stolen from other computer use time," it added.

On the other hand, Extreme Tech said the playable digital guitar may have cost Google $15,000 (P650,024) but cost the rest of the world a whopping $268 million (P11.613 billion).

AT&T is unable to unlock the existing iPhone 4 for you.

Apple started selling an unlocked iPhone 4 in the US earlier today, it is the GSM version which has previously been available with mobile operator AT&T, and now it seems that AT&T is unable to unlock the existing iPhone 4 for you.
According to @chronicwire, and Mike for Gadgetsteria, who have both contacted AT&T, the company has said that they are unable to unlock any iPhone 4′s at this time.
It isn’t clear whether this applies to iPhone 4′s that are still under the AT&T contract or ones that are out of the contract, or both so we are not sure whether AT&T will offer the option for devices to be unlocked in the future.

HTC Desire doesn’t have enough memory to run Android 2.3.

HTC Desire Android 2.3 Update Cancelled By HTC

Bad news for owners of the original HTC Desire, as HTC has announced that they wont be releasing an official Android 2.3 Gingerbread update for the original HTC Desire.
According to HTC the reason that the update has been cancelled is because the HTC Desire doesn’t have enough memory to run Android 2.3 Gingerbread and the HTC Sense UI.
Our engineering teams have been working hard for the past few months to find a way to bring Gingerbread to the HTC Desire without compromising the HTC Sense experience you’ve come to expect from our phones. However, we’re sorry to announce that we’ve been forced to accept there isn’t enough memory to allow us both to bring Gingerbread and keep the HTC Sense experience on the HTC Desire. We’re sincerely sorry for the disappointment that this news may bring to some of you.
Of course you can still get Android 2.3 Gingerbread on your HTC Desire, it just wont be the official HTC release with the HTC Sense UI.

The Perfect Group Shot | How your camera phone is about to get way more awesome.

Check the video below:Rewind captures a burst of five full resolution photographs, allowing the user to pick and choose the best bits from each photo. The selected faces are immediately composited into a single photograph, ready for sharing. We found Scalado on the show floor for a repeat performance.
As you can see in the video, Rewind is intelligent enough to detect faces and allow the user–ahem, photographer–to select which faces should be used in the final shot. Scalado said they’re working on a new version with smile and blink detection that can even do the selecting for you, making the process of getting the perfect group shot an almost automatic experience.
The only downside is that, at this time, they’re only looking to distribute the technology via OEMs–meaning you shouldn’t expect to see a Rewind app in the market any time soon. The burst photo capture is processor-intensive, ultimately limiting the end range of devices it can run on (and explaining why Scalado has paired with Qualcomm and is testing on that beast of a device).

What say you, the avid phone photographer? Is this something you’d want in your phone? If manufacturers started offering the feature, would that be a real draw to the device or just a “nice to have?” Personally I think it’s pretty awesome tech, but I’m still waiting on the boost in cell camera optics to really make it worth it.

Samsung ‘to overtake Nokia as biggest smartphone vendor’ | TechiePk

Handsets such as the Nexus S will help Samsung overtake Nokia as the biggest smartphone vendor, according to analysts. Photograph: Albert Gea/Reuters

Samsung will become the world’s largest smartphone maker this quarter, overtaking the struggling Nokia, which has led the market since 1996, the analysts Nomura forecast on Monday.
Nomura also forecast that Apple will outpace the Finnish phone maker in the top end of the mobile market in the third quarter of this year, adding to its woes, which include dramatic cuts in its profit forecast and a downgrading of its credit rating.
Other analysts agreed that Nokia’s position as the top seller in smartphones is likely to be overtaken either in this quarter or the next.
Nomura is bullish about the prospects for Samsung, a Korean company which makes a broad range of electronic equipment, including smartphones running Google’s Android mobile operating system, Microsoft’s Windows Phone, and its own bada software.
In the first quarter of this year Nokia sold just over 24m smartphones worldwide, but it has since said that its mobile division is coming under pricing and sales pressure from rivals. Apple sold 18.7m iPhones in the first quarter of 2011, while Samsung sold 12.6m. But Samsung has been ramping up its production and shifting its focus to smartphones, which are more profitable than low-end handsets.
“Nokia looks set to relinquish its smartphone crown to Samsung and Apple,” Nomura analysts said in a research note. “Further emphasising the shift in power to Asia is our forecast for HTC to almost match Nokia during 2012.

”Nokia’s mobile division revenues and profits: what the analysts forecast Research firms Gartner and Canalys both said they saw Nokia – which created the smartphone market with its 1996 launch of the Communicator model – losing smartphone volume leadership later this year.
“If Nokia’s new phones [running Microsoft's Windows Phone software] are not well received in the third quarter and (with) the [Samsung] Galaxy S2 ramping up, Samsung might overtake them and become the smartphone leader in the third quarter,” said Carolina Milanesi, smartphone analyst for the research company Gartner.
Nokia has lost initiative in the smartphone market to Apple’s iPhone with its proprietary iOS operating system and Google’s Android devices, and at the lower end to more nimble Asian rivals such as ZTE.
Overall, Nokia still makes more cellphones than Samsung due to its strong position in basic cellphones and its wider distribution network in emerging countries. But analysts polled last week forecast that it will ship fewer than 100m phones a quarter this year for the first time since the beginning of 2009, and for only the second time since the end of 2006, as “white label” rivals begin to cut into its share of the wider business.
The company is abandoning its Symbian platform for smartphones over the next 18 months and switching to Microsoft’s software as part of an overhaul of its phone business set out in February by Stephen Elop, a Canadian formerly at Microsoft who was appointed chief executive in September.
On 31 May Nokia abandoned hope of meeting key annual and quarterly targets just weeks after setting them, raising questions over whether its new boss can deliver on the turnaround he promised.
Shares in Nokia were 0.6% firmer at €4.33 at the start of the day, in line with a slightly stronger technology sector.

Diamond Covered iPad | $1.2 Million

We have featured various iPhone’s and iPad’s covered in a variety of precious metals and stones here at Geeky Gadgets, the latest one could quite possibly be the worlds most expensive iPad, as it retails for $1.2 million.
The $1.2 million iPad is covered in 18 carat gold and features a total of 300 carats of flawless diamonds, with the Apple logo on the back and the home button on the front covered in black diamonds.
Personally I could think of a lot better things to spend $1.2 million on than an iPad covered in diamonds, should you want one they will be available from Camael Diamonds.

News: Get a Chance to Play The Digital Guitar that Google put up on His Home Page | Google Keeps Les Paul Doogle for one more Day

Islamabad: The digital guitar that Google put up on his home page, to celebrate the 96th birthday of the country and jazz guitarist, songwriter and inventor Les Paul, will stay on for another day, Google informed in a Twitter post.
Since Google said it is extending the doodle for US users only, users outside the US can continue to strum the Google Doodle guitar, by clicking on the "Go to Google.com" link on the country-specific Google pages.
"Due to popular demand, we're leaving the Les Paul doodle up in the US for an extra day. Thanks for jamming with us!," a post on the official Google Twitter account said.
The Google doodle in honour of Les Paul is playable by hovering the cursor over the doodle and even by the computer keyboard. Users could also record the their own 30-second track.

The doodle was made with a combination of JavaScript, HTML5 Canvas, CSS, Flash and tools like the Google Font API, goo.gl and App Engine. Google engineers Kristopher Hom and Joey Hurst and doodle team lead Ryan Germick helped put together the innovative doodle.
Google has now become more frequent with animated and interactive doodles. Of the last 10 Google doodles, five included animations or were interactive.
The Google doodle had first gone interactive in May 2010 to celebrate the 30th birthday of the popular Pac-Man game.
For a dozen years, Google has been occasionally swapping its everyday logo for a doodle. The Google doodles, an artistic take on the Google logo, have gained immense popularity over the past few years and the Google doodle team has put out commemorative doodles on numerous events of international or national importance, ranging from news events, civic milestones, birthdays, death anniversaries and important dates in history. Google estimates it has created more than 900 doodles since 1998, with 270 of them running in 2010. Some appear globally, and others are tailored for local markets.

Google Doodle Pays Tribute to Gibson Les Paul |

Everyone knows about Google Doodles by now, but that fact doesn’t make the experience of discovering the new Google Doodle any less fun. Earlier today, when I woke up, the first thing I saw on my screen was today’s Doodle, which is a tribute to guitar legend (among other things) Les Paul.

Born Lester William Polsfuss on the 9th of June in 1915, Les Paul is best known for the solid-body electric guitar. Enthusiasts will tell you that this guitar is what made the sound we know and love as rock ‘n roll possible. And every guitar player – aspiring or accomplished – will know a Les Paul for what it is.
Back to what Google has for us today – the Doodle is fun, fun, fun! My opinion is that it seems to be hit and miss with Google Doodle – some of them not being that remarkable at all. In this case, though, they did a pretty good job. Not exactly like the Pac-Man Doodle, but good enough.
You just need to hover your mouse over the strings and you get to play music – not quite like you do on a real guitar, but it still is a lot of fun. You even get to turn a sound effects bar (I think that’s what it is). I tried capturing the screen while playing (the guitar strings light up), but no matter how hard I tried, I just wasn’t fast enough. You can’t imagine how long I tried to get those darned strings!
In any case, when you do need a break today, check out the Doodle. Don’t blame me if you end up “wasting” a lot of time playing around with the “chords” though via. forevergeek :

Core i7 CPU - 8 GB of RAM - a 2-Tera-byte Hard Drive - Windows 7 OS| The New HP Touch Smart 610

Specs can sometimes speak for themselves, and any computer would be lucky to have all of this stuff under the hood: a 2.93-GHz Core i7 CPU, 8 GB of RAM, a terabyte hard drive, a Radeon 5570 graphics card, a TV tuner, a slot-loading Blu-ray player and DVD burner (with LightScribe), and both 802.11n and Bluetooth built-in.
But the computer in question is not a high-test gaming machine, it’s a touchscreen all-in-one desktop, the latest in HP’s TouchSmart line.
The TouchSmart 610 represents perhaps the top of the line of all-in-ones on the market today. Its feature list is untouchable and its benchmark scores run rings around everything else in the category, but that’s just the beginning.
The 23-inch display (1920 x 1080 pixels) is unbelievably spacious, and it features a first-of-its-kind swiveling system that lets it recline from dead-upright to a 60 degree angle. Why would you want your monitor screen to point nearly at the ceiling? Why, so you can use it standing up. This clever design feature makes the machine much better for use while standing than other machines, as the usual hunch-and-squint required to read them is avoided. I’d suggest the 610 is perfect for displaying recipes in the kitchen, but I don’t know what kitchen would be big enough for it.
My only real complaint from a hardware standpoint is that the swivel hinge is surprisingly difficult to manipulate. The sheer size and weight of the machine really makes it a three-handed job, and I expect users of less physical stature won’t be comfortable making regular changes to its positioning. Even I was worried about knocking the whole thing over when trying to simply kick the viewing angle back a bit.
My only other complaint about the 610 is aimed at its price tag. While $899 gets you in the door, you’ll have to shell out almost twice that for the full effect, and that’s a tough sell in a world where most vendors are putting out solid all-in-ones for around $1,000. Demerits given for greed.
WIRED Amazing performance for an all-in-one. Beautiful design and gorgeous, responsive screen. Thumping audio courtesy of Beats by Dre.
TIRED Simply too expensive. Access to rear USB ports is tricky. Swivel mechanism needs a little spit and polish. Included keyboard is too thin; keys have minimal travel

A Human-Powered Helicopter Flies First Time | Students of Maryland University

A University of Maryland team has succeeded in building and flying a helicopter powered entirely by a single human pilot. Next Step: The Sikorsky Prize, a human-powered-helicopter award that has been awaiting a winner for 30 years.

With a nod to the zany flying machines of the days of yore, some University of Maryland students will attempt to make history this Wednesday when they test-fly their human-powered helicopter for the first time.
In hopes of propelling them towards winning the Sikorsky Prize, a team of more than 50 graduate and undergraduate students from the A. James Clark School of Engineering will be taking their helicopter, Gamera, for its maiden voyage.
Gamera has rotors at each of the four ends of its X-shaped frame. Each crossbar of the frame is 60-feet long and each rotor is 42 feet in diameter. Under the frame sits a pilot's model, where a student will power the helicopter with a combination of hand and foot pedaling.
Gamera weighs-in at a feathery 210 pounds, student pilot included, and owes its light weight to the balsa wood, foam, mylar and carbon fiber used in construction.
If Gamera can hover for 60 seconds, reach a height of three meters and remain within a 10-meter box from lift off, the team will take home the Sikorsky Challenge's $250,000 prize. Doing so will also nab the team a world record for first human-powered helicopter powered by a female.
The pilot for the test flight will be University of Maryland life science graduate student, Judy Wexler.
The team has been tinkering on Gamera for two years to compete for the Sikorsky Prize, which is run by theAmerican Helicopter Society (AHS). Currently, the Clark School team is the only team sanctioned by the AHS for making an official attempt. No team has succeeded since the prize was first offered in 1980.
Somewhere, the ghosts of Leonardo da Vinci and the Wright Brothers are giving thumbs-up.

Game Boy Case for iPhone 4 ? iPWN

When it comes to the iPhone, accessory manufacturers would certainly love this handset to bits and pieces because it is hugely popular, and folks tend to want to accessorize their smartphone in order to stand out from the rest of the crowd. You have your wish this time around with the iPWN! Case that will play nice with both the Verizon Wireless as well as AT&T iPhone 4.
It comes in a super slim fit design that measures a mere 2mm thick – definitely not something that will add any unnecessary bulge to your handbag or pockets. Apart from that, it won’t hinder your access to the touchscreen display, buttons and peripheral ports – just like what any other good iPhone case should do, while offering adequate protection against knocks and bumps. Boasting IML (In Mold Labeling) technology, that will deliver up to 3 layers of protection to the case, all the while preventing color fading and resistance to moisture.
Would you fork out $16.99 for the iPWN! Case?

« TechiePK » Easy Cap

It seems like technology always finds us better and simpler ways of doing things, even if it only saves us a few precious seconds of labor.
Remember when ring tabs used to be on soda and beer cans? I guess people would just carelessly litter by tossing the ring tabs over their shoulder. Someone in the early eighties figured out that you can attach the tab to the can itself. Now, this easier method of manufacture is a standard.
I suppose that the same could apply to soda bottle caps. I’m not talking about the glass bottles with the improved twist-off caps, but the plastic ones that always twisted off, probably from day one. It’s all right to admit that you sometimes have a hard time opening these things, but the “Easy Cap”, designed by Shao-Nung Chen, should give you some more leverage with its teardrop shape. Heck, if you position your thumb just right, you can open your bottle with just one hand.
I suppose that if this particular cap catches on, it will be like the ring tab. I can barely remember the ring tab, and I have to explain it to my children. I wonder if my children will have to explain to their children hard caps. (That would be soda bottle caps that are not the Easy Cap).
