The new USB cooking pot or Hatsuden-Nabe uses excess heat to charge your smartphone keeping it topped up while you prepare a brew. Developed by TES NewEnergy Corp., the Hatsuden-Nabe transforms waste heat into electric current.

The 16 cm diameter pot,  has a the rmoelectric material developed by TES NewEnergy Corp, at its base that takes advantage of a phenomenon known as the Seebeck effect.  It uses the temperature difference between the heat source (~ 550 ° C) and water boiling (~ 100 ° C) to generate an electrical current of about 200 ~ 250 mA, enough to recharge a smartphone in 3 ~ 5 hours.

 Fujitsu’s concept devices have figured out what consumers really want. Last week, we reported on the hybrid notebook/tablet that can fold into quarters, and now this touch pad keyboard.

Clearly, customization is key for this touchpad keyboard. Some users prefer that ergonomic keyboard with the split diagonal setup, while others prefer the traditional method. This allows the user to pick the type of keyboard that he or she wants.

All in all, it looks like something that could help out those who love the numeric keypad but don’t have it on their laptop. It also looks like it would come in handy for when changing language layouts is an issue. Not that I’ve ever had that problem, but in the age of “there’s an app for that” consumers want a lot more freedom on their personal electronics.

Of course, this is assuming that every consumer is used to a touchscreen. For me, it would take me a while to get used to a full-sized keyboard as I am used to the haptic feedback and clickity-click of the keys. However, I don’t see how this could work without a touchscreen unless some sort of new apparatus gets involved for a shape-shifting keyboard.

I am assuming that if laptops are ever devices with twin touch screens, this feature by Fujitsu would be a standard feature.

Toshiba, Hitachi Halt LCD Production in Japan

Due to damage from the devastating earthquake in Japan, Toshiba has been forced to close down its LCD assembly line at a plant near Tokyo for a month, a Toshiba spokeswoman said on Thursday.

Another LCD maker, Hitachi, has also been forced to halt production at one of its factories, and Sony and Panasonic have also suspended operations at several of their plants.

The negative impact of these disruptions on Japan’s economy is obvious, but it’s hard to tell how they will affect global LCD supply, as Panasonic plans to offset the damage by increasing production in other factories, while Hitachi might get help from Taiwan-based Chimei Innolux Corp.

Some analysts think that smartphone shortages are still a possibility, though. “Given that the market for smartphones outside Japan is pretty active, supply disruptions there could cause problems for some handset makers of some models,” said Damian Thong, an analyst at Macquarie Capital Securities in Japan.

It’s too early to point to specific smartphone models, but the earthquake in Japan might soon start affecting us all in the way of “out of stock” signs.

Some of you might have been confused by my headline, but just picture using your hand to do the gestures that you would using a mouse, but don’t use the mouse.

As you can see in the video, not much has changed in mouse technology for over twenty years. In all honesty, I think that most users are used to them like it was a third arm. This evoMouse seems like it would be the natural evolution of a computer mouse. It doesn’t look like it would take much getting used to, and it does things that regular mice cannot.

You will note that it is powered by a USB cable, so you wouldn’t have to worry about the power running out like with wireless mice.

All in all, I would say that this is a welcome change for technology. I notice that the evoMouse is in front of the user’s hand, but could it be altered so it is on the side? That way, a laptop could come with an evoMouse and users would not have to purchase a separate peripheral.

I don’t have a price or any availability date on this, so let’s just say it is under development.

ZMP City Simulator Experiment

Some of you might remember the last time we covered theRoboCar ZMP, which is essentially the Knight Rider dream of a car with an autopilot.

I’m not certain whether this City Simulator Experiment is related to this story, but it sounds like it could be how the robot car works.

Think of it as a way to operate a remote control car just like you would operate a real car. You will notice this man at the giant screen, and I have a video of it after the jump in action. I also have another video of the car if you want to see it for yourself.

I think this might be a very fun toy for kids who can’t drive as yet. Just be sure to wear your helmet. In fact, while we are on that subject, why is this man wearing a helmet? I mean, real drivers aren’t required to wear helmets, for crying out loud.

It certainly looks like a lot of fun. You know those people that like to go to Go-Cart tracks to do some racing, even though they can drive actual cars? Well, perhaps they would love to race around some serious tracks with this bad boy. I’m not certain what ZMP has in store.

Latest concept: Double U USB– means you’ll always insert your USB the right side up

USB ports play a huge part in our everyday lives but one thing that always seems to catch us is the when we go to insert them. Even with a 50-50 chance of getting the USB connector the right way up, more than not mines always seem to be the wrong way around when fumbling to make a connection.

Designer Ma Yi Xuan hopes to put an end to the heartache and has designed the Double U USB that can go it to a port either way up.

The Double U USB has two contact layers which are both retractable and provides a connection which ever way around the USB connector is inserted, with the one side retracting back into the device and the other creating the data connection.

The design is still a concept at the moment but hopefully it wont take to long to find its way into production.

I’m don’t sure about you, but I’m still getting used to the fact that it won’t be officially called the PSP anymore but instead the “Next generation portable”, aka NGP. As you can see in the gallery below, the NGP will be the first portable entertainment system to feature two analog sticks.

The new PSP NGP will boast both 3G and WiFi connectivity, a five-inch multi-touch OLED display and run on an ARM Cortex-A9 core CPU. The new portable playstation system also incorporates a unique multi-touch pad on the rear, together with a front touch display panel.
